The Power of Patience in Autism Treatment
Like all children, those who have autism spectrum disorder (ASD) need the love and support of their parents, caregivers, teachers and others. Children who are on the autism spectrum, though, may require a different kind of support and a different kind of help, due to the unique challenges that they face.
Providing this support can be challenging for parents of children with autism and even professionals who are trained in treatment methods such as applied behavioral analysis, or ABA therapy. That’s because children who have autism have vastly different needs, while their behaviors can also be challenging and unpredictable.
As such, it’s extremely important to display patience when providing love and support to children on the autism spectrum. There is indeed great power in patience, and it’s something that everyone needs to practice.
When you do, you’ll be sending clear messages that everything is OK and that you’re there to do whatever you can to help them in any way you need. Here are some ways that you can practice patience in autism treatment.

Be a Good Role Model
Like any child, those who are on the autism spectrum look up to their parents. They seek out adults in authority positions — such as teachers, caregivers, daycare workers and others professionals — for guidance as well as approval.
That’s why it’s so important that you serve as a good role model to children with autism. They will look at how you respond to certain situations, which then can influence how they respond to similar situations.
If you become upset when faced with challenges, roll your eyes or sigh, your child will take notice. Then, they’re more likely to repeat act like you did in similar situations, potentially even mimicking your reactions, facial expressions and other nonverbal cues.
It’s essential to always be aware of how you’re reacting to certain things so that you can be the role model that you want to be, and that your child needs. It’s OK to feel frustrated, angry or sad, but you want to be able to talk through those emotions with your child so they can understand as well.
Be Realistic
A major key to displaying patience in autism treatment is understanding the child’s individual needs, wants, desires, strengths and challenges. Since autism spans such a wide spectrum, every child will be affected differently, with different signs, symptoms and behaviors.
It’s vital, then, to understand your child’s specific challenges and idiosyncrasies so that you can be realistic about what they can do and what they might struggle with.
Don’t compare what they are doing to what you think they should be able to do. Be realistic about their skills and abilities, and work on helping them build up the skills with which they struggle.
This is something that ABA therapists do every day. Through in-depth evaluation, they gather information about these strengths and challenges, and then cater an ABA therapy treatment program that specifically addresses each patient’s unique traits.
This not only meets every individual where they’re at, it also makes it easier to display patience during treatment.
Take Care of Yourself
So much time is spent helping to support children with autism that people who do so can often forgo taking care of themselves. Yet, this is a big mistake that can lead to disastrous consequences.
It’s always important for parents and professionals alike to take a break when needed and to take care of themselves. Supporting children with autism can certainly be exhausting, and it’s OK to admit as much.
You need to make sure that you’re managing your own anxiety and stress properly and proactively so that you can be the best support possible to the children you’re trying to support. If you aren’t your best self, then it’ll be hard for you to be the best parent or professional to support them.
This means not just taking breaks, but also ensuring you’re taking mental health respites, eating well and getting enough sleep. By taking a holistic approach to your own wellness, you’ll be ensuring you are the best person for children with autism.
