New Mexico Local Autism Resources

Navigating a new diagnosis or searching for the right support systems for a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can feel like a daunting journey. In New Mexico, families are fortunate to have a robust network of state agencies, non-profits and educational advocates dedicated to empowering the autism community.

Whether you are looking for diagnostic clarity, financial assistance or a community of parents who understand your experience, the Land of Enchantment offers a wealth of resources.

At Blue Gems ABA New Mexico, we believe that informed families are the strongest advocates. While we provide specialized, evidence-based applied behavior analysis (ABA therapy) to help children reach their full potential, we also want to ensure you have access to the broader support system available in your backyard.

Below is a guide to some of the top local resources for autism in New Mexico.

Table Of Contents

The Center for Development and Disability (CDD) at UNM

As one of New Mexico’s premier resources for developmental disabilities, the CDD provides a comprehensive Autism Portal that serves as a gateway for families. They offer the Autism Spectrum Evaluation Clinic for children older than 3, as well as the Early Childhood Evaluation Program for infants and toddlers.

Beyond diagnosis, the CDD provides parent training, school-based consultations and a dedicated Family & Provider Resource Team to help you navigate local services.

The CDD is located at 2300 Menaul Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87107. They can be reached at (505) 272-1852 or online at cdd.health.unm.edu.

Parents Reaching Out (PRO)

Navigating the healthcare and special education systems requires a specific set of tools. Parents Reaching Out is a non-profit organization that empowers families through family-to-family healthcare information and intensive training on the IEP (Individualized Education Program) process.

Their staff often includes parents of children with special needs themselves, providing a unique level of empathy and practical advice for navigating birth-to-26 transitions.

PRO is located at 1920 Columbia Drive SE, Albuquerque, NM 87106, and can be reached at (505) 247-0192 or parentsreachingout.org.

Office of the Special Education Ombud

If you are facing barriers within the public school system, the state’s Special Education Ombud can be a crucial ally. This office helps parents understand their legal rights under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and can attend IEP meetings to ensure the student’s needs remain the central focus.

The office acts as a bridge between families and school districts to resolve conflicts and promote inclusive education.

The office is located at 625 Silver Ave. SW, Suite 100, Albuquerque, NM 87102, and can be reached at (505) 841-4565 or via email at [email protected].

New Mexico Autism Society

The heart of the New Mexico Autism Society is community connection. An affiliate of the Autism Society of America, the organization hosts monthly activities designed to be sensory-friendly and fun for the whole family.

From the Ellen Reavis Race for Autism to educational conferences, NMAS provides a space where families can connect, share resources and advocate for state-level policy changes.

The society can be reached at (505) 332-0306, and more information is available online at nmautismsociety.org.

Abrazos Family Support Services

Serving families in Sandoval and Bernalillo counties, Abrazos is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for those with developmental delays.

One of their most valued services is respite care, which provides temporary, professional care for a child so that parents and primary caregivers can take a much-needed break to recharge. They also offer infant-toddler developmental support and community-based family living programs.

They are located at 11500 Menaul Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87112, and can be reached at (505) 896-6150 or abrazosnm.org.

Developmental Disabilities Supports Division (DDSD)

The New Mexico Health Care Authority’s DDSD oversees the state’s waiver programs, which are essential for funding long-term support. The “Developmental Disabilities Waiver” and the “Medically Fragile Waiver” provide funding for services such as case management, behavioral supports and community inclusion.

Since these programs often have waiting lists, applying early is a critical step in securing your child’s future independence.

The DDSD is located at 5301 Central Ave. NE, Suite 203, Albuquerque, NM 87108, and can be reached at (505) 841-5552 or hca.nm.gov.
