People who have autism spectrum disorder (ASD) face many challenges in life. Just like the name of the neurodevelopmental disorder suggests, the signs and symptoms as well as severity certainly spans a wide spectrum, with people affected in significantly different ways.

Many experts believe that the world-famous physicist was on the autism spectrum1, though it’s not certain. Some of his characteristics that line up with ASD include problems with communicating, difficulty with social relationships and obsessive interests.

Einstein, who many people have described as being a “loner,” is one of the most famous scientists to ever live.

Two: Clay Marzo

One of the top surfers in the world, Clay Marzo was diagnosed as having ASD in 20072. In recent years, he said he “always knew something was different about me.”

Marzo has intense focus, which has actually benefited him in his sport quite a lot. He can often be seen rubbing his hands together quickly before he surfs, which is one way in which he engages in self-stimulatory behavior, or stimming.

Three: Anthony Hopkins

Anthony Hopkins is one of the most celebrated actors of his time, having won an Academy Award, two Emmys and three BAFTAs. He is probably best known for his role in The Silence of the Lambs, though he’s also been in many other movies.

Hopkins was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome when he was a child3, and that disorder is now lumped under the ASD umbrella.

Four: Elon Musk

Elon Musk, the entrepreneur who runs companies such as Tesla, social media platform X and SpaceX, announced while he was hosting “Saturday Night Live” in 2021 that he has autism spectrum disorder.

He said at the time that he has been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome4. Musk has been recognized at times as being the richest person in the world, with net worth well above $100 billion.

Five: Dr. Vernon Smith

Dr. Vernon Smith is an economics professor at Chapman University. He’s regarded as the inventor of the field of experimental economics, which resulted in him winning the Nobel Prize.

Smith believes that his autism has helped him in life, as he doesn’t feel some of the same social pressures to do certain things like others do5.

Six: Chris Packham

Chris Packham is a TV presenter, photographer, author and naturalist. In his 40s, he was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome6.

Packham said he often was taunted while in school, which caused him to be depressed. He found a connection with birds and animals, which he found to be easier to connect to than other humans.

Seven: Dr. Greta Thunberg

Swedish environmental activist Dr. Greta Thunberg is essentially the public face of the school climate strike movement. She shared publicly on social media that she was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome7.

While she has said that her disorder has limited her in the past, it hasn’t stopped her from achieving what she wants.

Eight: Dan Aykroyd

Dan Aykroyd is a comedian, actor, screenwriter and singer. He is best known for being one of the first cast members on “Saturday Night Live” and being in movies such as “The Blues Brothers” and “Ghostbusters.”

In the 1980s, he was diagnosed with autism8, and he was actually expelled from two different schools. He has reported that he’s been obsessed with law enforcement and ghosts, and that he carries a police badge with him.

Nine: Benjamin Franklin

One of the founding fathers of the United States, Benjamin Franklin is believed to have been on the autism spectrum9. He is known for many famous sayings and many inventions, and was also the first U.S. ambassador to France.

One of his most famous sayings, in fact, shows that people on the autism spectrum are visual learners.

Ten: Bill Gates

Best know for founding and running Microsoft, one of the world’s largest companies, Gates has long been rumored to have Asperger’s Syndrome10. While he has never confirmed that he does have autism, many of his personality traits fit the common profile for Asperger’s.

For example, he is know to display social awkwardness, can focus intensely, and often avoids eye contact. Of course, these are all common symptoms of ASD.

That being said, without a confirmed diagnosis, we don’t know if Bill Gates is actually on the autism spectrum. Either way, he is an inspiration to generations of children who struggle socially but need to know that they can still succeed.
